Right, then...

Took the Outback through the quickie gas station car wash. It has EyeS ight (Subaru’s name for adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance). When the wash was done, that dryer thing dropped from the ceiling to blow air on to the car...well, the EyeSight thought that there was a car or something in front of me, so it put on the brakes and disabled the throttle. Meanwhile the air dryer is running and I’m desperately trying to find the disable button before my time runs out....so half the car got dried. I’ll have to remember this next time...

...but at least I know the collision avoidance works, now....

Yep, there were a bunch of articles a couple years ago about this issue. Here’s the one Jalopnik linked to: http://bestride.com/news/technology/these-33-vehicles-need-special-help-to-drive-through-a-car-wash

Specifically regarding Subaru, it says:

This applies to any Subaru equipped with EyeSight. Subaru’s EyeSight collision avoidance system can see car washes as obstacles and may apply the brakes, preventing your vehicle from moving through an automatic car wash. In order to get through it, you have to disable the system.

From Subaru’s manual:

Press and hold [Pre-Collision Braking System OFF] switch for approximately two seconds or longer to turn off the Pre-Collision Braking System and Pre-Collision Throttle Management

When these functions are off, the Pre-Collision Braking System OFF indicator light on the instrument panel illuminates.

Oh, I figured there would be.  Of course, t he fun part is a) being able to see that switch in the dark, and b) figuring out which if the pictograms means “Pre-collision braking system.”

Yep, always nice to have to do those things quickly on the fly without being sure exactly where the control is.
